For the past year we have been running ‘Food Surplus’ cooking classes every Tuesday (during term time) from The Hub in Altrincham.
We are now looking to recruit a community chef and a venue to host our Food Surplus Workshops in Bolton and Wigan!
We run this workshop alongside The Bread and Butter Thing, who collect food surplus from Supermarkets and redistribute to the community.
Each week, using the contents from the food surplus bags, we run a “Ready, Steady, Cook” style cooking class – every session is different and it’s always a fun challenge to create meals from an array of ingredients! It’s a great way for people to gain confidence in the kitchen while also getting ideas of what they can cook with the food in their bags for the week ahead.
We then enjoy the meal together and share it round with volunteers and people from the community.
This is free for anyone to take part in and we offer monthly sign ups (so participants who sign up get 3 or 4 classes).
We are excited to announce we now have the funding to take this project and replicate it in every borough of Greater Manchester! We will be recruiting someone in each borough with chef/community cooking/catering experience to lead the Food Surplus Workshops once a week for 10 weeks, this will be a paid role and we will provide training.
If you know an individual or organisation in your borough that this project sounds perfect for please don’t hesitate to get in touch and let us know! We are currently focusing our search on Bolton and Wigan so if you have any leads you would like us to be aware of please email [email protected] 🙂
Or if you would like to take part in the current Food Surplus Workshops taking place at The Hub in Altrincham – sign up via our Eventbrite page! and for the other boroughs of Greater Manchester – keep an eye out Spring 2024 for a Food Surplus Workshop near you 👀
