This Saturday, we’re asking you to donate something a little different to your local food bank – socks!
Every weekend until Christmas, we’ll be coming up with non-food items you can donate to your local food bank. Find one nearby here! A food bank might seem a funny place to take a pair of socks, but in fact, Shelter reports that this item is extremely important and under-donated. For those experiencing homelessness, often walking long distances daily and sleeping outside without a change of clothes, a clean pair of socks is essential both for staying warm and avoiding health problems. Stopping off at a a food bank for a fresh pair can be crucial.
But if your old socks are worn out, never fear. Stand4Socks is a social enterprise that asks the question, what if socks could change the world? Like us, they use a buy one, give one model. So every time you buy a pair of their sustainably-made socks, they donate a thick, anti-bacterial pair to someone experiencing homelessness, around the world. These also make a fun, practical and ethical Christmas gift, so get shopping!
