Apricots

An easy to grow tree!

Apricots can be grown freestanding in milder climates or on a warm, south-facing wall. Add compost to the soil and plant in late autumn when soil is still warm. Ensure that the soils are well-drained, moisture retentive, and preferably slightly alkaline.

Cover apricot trees with horticultural fleece to protect from frost but remove during the day to allow sunlight and pollinating insects to reach the plant. Heavy crops should be thinned to about 9cm apart when the fruits are the size of hazelnuts.

Top tips

– Water newly planted trees regularly.

– Use granular fertiliser in late February.

– The fruit is ready in late summer when it is soft and separates from the tree easily.

– If you don’t want to consume the fruit immediately, they can be dried or made into preserves like jam!
