Easy to grow all year round!
Spinach can be grown all year round if you choose the right varieties – some are suited to Spring sowing and others to Autumn. For a summer crop, seeds can be sown from February (under fleece or cloches), or outdoors from mid-March to the end of May. For a winter crop, seeds can be sown in August and September.
Before sowing, ensure good growth by digging the soil, removing big stones, weeds and incorporating plenty of garden compost or well-rotted organic matter. Rake in 150g per square metre of general fertiliser. Sow seeds 2.5cm (1in) deep in rows 30cm (12in) apart, or in a large container. Seeds should be around 7.5cm (3in) apart.
Top tips
– Keep well-watered during dry summer periods.
– Winter varieties will need protection from October onwards – cover with cloches or fleece which will also help to protect the plants from birds.
– Harvest the leaves continually once they’re large enough to pick.
– To prevent the leaves tasting bitter, ensure the soil is rich and contains plenty of organic matter.
– Spinach can be susceptible to mildew – to prevent this make sure there is plenty of space around the plants to improve air circulation, water the soil at the base of the plants and choose mildew resistant varieties.
