Understanding food labels

Do you know the difference in date labels on food packaging?

Here’s a quick reminder about what the date labels on food actually mean – applying this knowledge will help you to cut down on food waste and save you money!

Best before date
This means that the food is at its best before this date, but will still be safe to eat afterwards.

Use by date
It is important that food must be used by the date provided, even if it smells and looks fine. Food past this date is not safe!

Display until date
This is only to guide those who work in supermarkets. It tells them by which date the product needs to be removed from the shelf.
