Oregano

An easy to grow Mediterranean herb that loves the sun!

Oregano thrives in a warm, sunny environment. Oregano seeds can start to be sown indoors from February to May. Continue to grow your plants indoors until early summer or until all danger of frost has passed. When planting outdoors, make sure to keep in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil.

To grow from seed, fill a small pot with seed compost and sow a few seeds on the surface. They need heat to germinate, so place the pots in a propagator or on a heated windowsill. Once large enough to handle, transfer them to larger pots filled with multi-purpose compost.

Top tips

  • – Be careful not to overwater as oregano suffers in wet soil.
  • – Pick leaves before the flower buds open. Either use fresh, or dry and freeze to use later.
  • – Cut plants back completely in midsummer to encourage fresh growth.
  • – Oregano is perfect sprinkled on a pizza or why not try it out in our delicious recipe for Jambalaya!
