Baked beans are a staple in any household and while they offer high amounts of protein, shop bought brands also have much more sugar/salt than you think. This easy recipe is full of smoky flavour and will make you think twice about staying brand loyal!

Ingredients

1 stick of celery, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped/crushed
1 tsp smoked paprika
300g passata
1 tbsp tomato purée
1 tbsp olive oil/cooking spray
400g tinned haricot beans, drained

Method

  1. Heat oil in a medium-sized pan. Add the garlic and celery – allow to sizzle but be careful not to burn.
  2. Reduce heat to low, add the smoked paprika and stir.
  3. Add the passata and purée, then simmer for around 15 minutes (until the sharp taste of tomato has gone and the sauce has thickened).

4. Add the beans, stir frequently and simmer for a further 10 minutes then serve!

Chef’s tips

Sprinkle grated cheese on top to garnish! Serve on toast/bread bun.
