Oat Apple Crumble

A tasty twist on a classic

A warming and lightly spiced apple crumble made using tinned apples and a crunchy, oat crumble topping. Traditional but timeless, the modest Apple crumble is a much loved dessert originating from World War II rationing, to replace the more extravagant Apple Pie. Quick and easy to make, this dessert is a great end to any Sunday Lunch or family occasion.

Ingredients

For the Apples –
● 2 x 385g tins of apple slices
● 50g Granulated Sugar
● ½ tsp Ground Cinnamon

For the oat crumble –
● 100g Butter, brought to room temperature and cubed before using
● 100g Plain Flour
● 30g Granulated sugar
● 30g Soft Brown Sugar
● 50g Rolled Oats
● ½ tsp Ground Cinnamon

Method

1. Pre heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6.
2. For the apple filling, put the apples into a bowl with the sugar and cinnamon and mix together. Then place in a baking tin (I use a round 8inch pie dish).
3. For the crumble, put the flour and butter into a bowl and using either a mixer, food processor or your hands, blend together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
4. Stir in the sugar, cinnamon and oats.
5. Sprinkle over the top of the apples and bake in the pre heated oven for 40 minutes.
6. Serve with vanilla ice cream or custard.

Chef’s tips

You can replace the apples for any tinned fruit, such as pears or rhubarb.
